Book Group

by the Rev. Bob Olsen

The St. George’s Book Group meets on Mondays from 5-6 pm.  Our first meeting will be September 23rd.  All are welcome.

Welcome to the Bible is the next book we’ll be reading and discussing. Welcome to the Bible by Vicki K. Black and Peter Wenner (Morehouse Publishing ISBN: 978-0- 8192-2236-7), available through Amazon for $14.40 paperback or $8.79 Kindle version.  If you would like Deacon Bob Olsen to order a copy of the book for you, please let him know by September 11th, so that your book arrives in time.

Like the other “Welcome to…” books we’ve read, this one is short, only 116 pages front to back. But like the others, there is lots of information and questions at the end of each chapter to give us discussion topics.

 Chapter Titles are:

  1. The ImageBible as the Church’s Book.
  2. What is the Bible?
  3. How do we know what the Bible says?
  4. The Bible in the Church’s life.
  5. The Bible in the Prayer Book.
  6. Reading the Bible again for the first time.

From the introduction:
One of the early monks of the Egyptian desert in the third century captured the power of regular reading of the Scriptures can have on our lives: The nature of water is soft, the nature of stone is hard, but if a bottle is hung above a stone letting water drip down, it wears away the stone. It is like that with the word of God; it is soft and [our] heart is hard, but if [we] hear the word of God often, it will break open [our] heart to the fear of God.

We hope that you will join us Monday evenings.
