A Christian folk song from the 70s and 80s by John Fischer is titled “Have you seen Jesus my Lord?” I’m sure many of you have sung it, and we will be singing this song in April at one of the 9 a.m. services. The song reminds me of the verse from John 12:21 where some people said, “We wish to see Jesus.” I think that just about all of us would like to see Jesus more clearly.
The services and events of Holy Week give us an opportunity to see Jesus in new ways. For those of us who lead ministries in the church, it is easy to see Holy Week as something to survive – to get through the very busy schedule and make it to Easter. If you have been a Christian for a long time, it may be more difficult to go through this special week with a sense of expectation; we know the story so well.
I like to encourage people on Palm Sunday to say the Passion Narrative – the account of Jesus’ crucifixion said in various parts – with conviction as if they had never heard the story before. This attitude can be very helpful for all of Holy Week and Easter. If we approach each of the worship services with fresh eyes and open hearts, we may see Jesus in a way we have never done before.
Please join with me in following Jesus through this Holy Week and Easter – may we all see him more clearly!
